About Saskatoon

On behalf of the 2019 International Wheat Congress, we would like to welcome you to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – the heart of the Canadian Prairies! Surrounded by close to 25 million hectares of farm land in the Province of Saskatchewan, the agriculture and agri-food sectors drive this economy.

Saskatoon’s agriculture technology cluster includes many research institutes like the University of Saskatchewan, National Research Council, Saskatchewan Research Council, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and the Canadian Light Source (a 3rd generation Synchrotron) – all of which are private industry stakeholders or government organizations.

Saskatoon is the largest city in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada and is one of the world’s leading food-producing regions and a hub for agriculture related research:

Saskatchewan has over 40% of Canada’s agricultural land

Saskatchewan is the world’s top exporter of lentils, dried peas, mustard and flax
Saskatchewan supplies nearly a third of the world’s durum wheat
Saskatchewan exports almost half of the world’s canola meal and one third of canola oil
Saskatchewan supplies 40% of world potash, mainly for crop nutrient use
Saskatoon is the birth place of Canola, which is grown over more than 21 million acres in Canada (and many parts of the world).

The city of Saskatoon is favourably positioned, with the South Saskatchewan River winding through it. Seven bridges span its gentle flow, linking east to west. As an active city, residents and visitors alike flock to the Meewasin Valley trails, traversing 60 km of pathways in all seasons. The city’s youthful vitality and cultural richness are evident in every neighbourhood, thanks in part to the University of Saskatchewan, where cutting-edge technology draws the best minds from around the world. A vibrant and sophisticated arts community is tangible at the assortment of events and festivals taking place throughout the year. Boutique shopping, challenging golf courses, and fresh local cuisine round out Saskatoon’s appeal.

Weather: Saskatoon has a dry climate and averages 340.4 mm (13.40 in) of precipitation per year, with the summer being its wettest season. Saskatoon is also one of the sunniest places in Canada, averaging 2,381 hours of sunlight per year (that’s 6.5 hours each day).

Currency: Canadian Dollar (1 Canadian Dollar = approx. 0.75 US Dollar = approx. 0.66 Euro)
Electrical Appliances: Voltage, frequency and adapters in Canada are exactly the same as the United States, Mexico and Central America.

Canadian Standard: 120 Volts at 60 Hertz, flat blade plug (refer to image)

If you are travelling from a country with different electrical standards, a voltage converter and/or plug adapter may be required to conform to the 120 V Canadian standard.
